The Old Growth Trail near the Island Lake Lodge Trails and Paddles in Fernie, B.C. is one I will never forget. It was my first hike where I was surrounded by giant cedar trees, something that was pretty magical at the age of 13 or so. This easy trek passes some beauties that are over 800 years old. An impressive site in a world where trees of this age are a rare commodity.
The trail head is located 4km up the road towards the lodge with parking. The trail passes along 2km towards the lodge under the big, beautiful cedars with a small bit of elevation gain. The path is wide, packed dirt for comfortable walking. It is shady and cool even in the middle of summer making this a great choice for a hot day. You will see a variety of ferns, funghi and other plants that live in the shade of the old trees.
Once you reach the lodge there is a restaurant where you can grab a snack and a drink. Fuel up and head back down the trail to the parking lot. This is a great hike for families and beginner hikers. The Island Lake Lodge also offers guided hikes if you would like to learn from an expert and it looks like a gorgeous place to stay so you can explore all the trails they have to offer! Something I hope to do soon.
